A 'Stand Against Suella' protest is taking place in central London this Sunday (1 October), in response to the Home Secretary's latest inflammatory rhetoric — and the government's stance on immigration and LGBTQ+ rights.

In a speech on Tuesday, Suella Braverman — who appears to be angling for leadership via badwill — told the American Enterprise Institute in Washington DC that people facing discrimination or persecution based on sexual orientation should not qualify as refugees for asylum.

In rebuttal, Pride in London and African Rainbow Family are organising a protest in London's Parliament Square, which will gather from 3pm on Sunday 1 October.

Says Pride in London: "Suella Braverman's remarks impinge on fundamental LGBTQ+ rights and dignity. We cannot stay silent when a senior government official promotes such harmful views.

"We are calling on London's LGBTQ+ community and allies to join us at the protest. By turning up in force, we can send a powerful message to Suella and the government that they cannot trample LGBTQ+ rights. Together, we can make our voices heard."

In the same speech, Braverman said that "multiculturalism has failed" — which, as has been pointed out, is quite the claim given the background of her and Rishi Sunak's families, and the fact the pair occupy two of the highest offices in Britain.

Sunak has said he disagrees with Braverman's comments, but has failed to condemn them — although to be fair, he does have his plate full with his "priority number one" of fixing the country's potholes.
